Best fondue in Avoriaz
Celebrate the enduring relationship between cheese and skis
We've come up with a delicious list of the best fondues for you to try in and around Avoriaz!
There are many things to love about this area of France; the mountains, the wine and the food are amongst them. Thanks to our location, being nestled right up close to our neighbour Switzerland, one of the finest dishes to indulge in out here is the famous cheese fondue.
The word 'fondue' comes from the French 'fondre', which literally means to melt. Popular in the 1800s in the French and Swiss Alps, it was borne out of the necessity to use up aged cheeses and dried up bread during the winter months when fresh food was scarce.
Today the ritual of the cheese fondue is an integral and unmissable part of any ski holiday, and after skiing around a mountain in sub-zero temperatures, you merit the zillion calories in this ultimate cheese-fest.
Avoriaz is home to a number of great restaurants to suit every budget, appetite and group size. Most of these places have a Savoyard menu including a cheese fondue, but here we’ve found the best of the best, so all you have to do is book a table.
La Terrasse des Lindarets
La Terrasse is one of our favourites in resort. Tucked slightly off the beaten piste in the Goat Village below the Lindarets bowl, this restaurant is a bit of a hidden gem. The restaurant is a big traditional wooden chalet with a lively atmosphere and great music. It’s the perfect place to go if you’re out on holiday with a crew of mates who are here to party, or a corporate group here for the social.
The menu showcases Corsican speciality dishes and the cheese fondue on the menu is a must. Something about the flavour here makes it a standout dish, and when your pot is running low, the manager takes it out to the kitchen where the chef cracks an egg into the remaining cheese, and adds a little port to the mixture. It’s little things like this that make it a winner.
La Terrasse is open everyday from 09:00 to 17:00, the best time to go being late afternoon for a fantastic après vibe.
Les Fontaines Blanches
Hearty portions of cheese fondue, a large sunny terrace and a great après-ski vibe make this a popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike.
Located in the centre of Avoriaz, Les Fontaines Blanches menu veers towards traditional French Alpine dishes, but they also have a wood fired pizza oven and host regular theme nights such as BBQ, mussels, buffet, etc. for any non-melted cheese fans in your group.
Open daily throughout the winter season
Les Trappeurs
Les Trappeurs is a fantastic bar and restaurant with a vibrant atmosphere located piste-side, just below the Prodains bubble. It’s one of the larger restaurants in town with a huge terrace, as well as indoor seating. The terrace lends itself to those bluebird days when after a long morning of skiing, you just want to slide back into a deck chair and grin at the sun.
The menu here will appeal to you if you’re a foodie, as they have a mouth watering selection of meat and fish dishes, as well as their Savoyard specialities. Their cheese fondue, served with a meat plate of local charcuterie is one of the best sellers.
If you happen to be staying in Avoriaz for closing weekend in April, this is the place to grab your fondue, as they throw a huge party often with dancers and live music.
La Reserve
Enjoy a Mont d'Or fondue, a typically Swiss fondue or a gastronomic Swiss fondue with summer truffle at this fabulous Savoyard chalet with mountain inspired gourmet cuisine. La Reserve is set in the heart of Avoriaz and accessible on foot and by skis, enjoy the south facing terrace for a great fondue lunch!
La Reserve created in 1997, is open every day throughout the winter season from lunch to dinner and is recommended in the Michelin Guide.
La Cachette
La Cachette is located in the heart of the historical Dromonts area in Avoriaz. It has a cosy alpine interior, perfect for indulging your melted cheese cravings! You will find an extensive fondue menu with a difference. Try various flavoured fondues including black garlic and truffle served either in a traditional pot or an organic bread bowl.
On the menu are other classic Savoyard specialities including tartiflette and raclette. Open every day in the summer and winter season
Our top tips for fondue eating!
- Try a fondue at lunchtime rather than in the evening. This way you will avoid hot sweats and broken sleep as you metabolise all that cheese.
- Pimp up your fondue with a side of charcuterie and salad, mostly known as the "Fondue Complet".
- If you're in a group of four, try two different types of fondue between you as most restaurants offer fondues for a minimum of two people sharing.
- According to the locals, you should drink white wine and not red, with your fondue. Savoie whites, e.g. Aprémont or Rousette, have the necessary acidity to aid digestion.
- Don’t drink water with your meal! Water solidifies the cheese and makes it harder to digest.
- Agree in advance on the forfeit if you drop your bread into the cheese: the French generally have to buy the next bottle of wine. British forfeits are often less civilised, and generally involve doing something embarrassing.
Enjoy!
